This is the first „real“ entry in this blog. Welcome, dear reader! As of this moment, I’m exclusively talking to myself. What a weird thing to do, opening a blog, talking to no one in general. However, in the last decade or so I’ve stumbled upon countless similar sites, where people blogged about stuff they were interested in. From nerdy in-depth guides about self-hosted stuff to think pieces (in Substack et al.), I’ve broadened my mind and the scope of what I can do thanks to a lot of people that possibly started quite similar to me: With a lot of curiosity and a desire to understand, collect, order, sort and puzzle stuff together – whatever it may be. Cue the obligatory „standing of the shoulder of giants“, which is true in a multitude of ways. I would not sit in front of my notebook typing those lines if not for countless opportunities provided by teachers, tutors, coaches, guides and builders.
From the first foray into homepage backends during my apprenticeship (about 20 years ago!) to writing for an online magazine (hosted on WordPress, of course) to running not one, but two servers collecting and curating media for my own and other people’s enjoyment. Last but not least, ChatGPT and friends have opened many doors that were previously locked.
While GitHub, Docker and YAMLs have been somewhat enigmatic mysteries to me not that long ago, I’m currently tackling setting up a proper Unraid-Server in the basement. This endeavour shall partly be documented here. It involves some nitty-gritty software stuff I’m excited to puzzle together and even has some sweet hardware-building included as well! Can’t wait!
